2-1-1 is the national abbreviated dialing code for free access to health and human services Information and Referral (I&R). On Friday, July 21, 2000, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) assigned 2-1-1 for Human Services information and referral nationwide. 2-1-1 is to non-emergency assistance what 9-1-1 is to emergency response: a quick and easy way for people to access needed help by phone. 2-1-1 is answered by people trained to assess callers’ needs quickly and refer them to the most appropriate assistance. CNMUW’s 2-1-1 uses a comprehensive computerized database of more than 600 services from over 400 public, non-profit health and human service organizations.
